My name is Hershel Johnsville Walker and I owned and ran WDB Builders for over 30 years. Started in 1978 and basically ending in 2010 when I retired, WDB was my life. As a general
Our First Project – October 1978
contractor we built everything from homes to barns, libraries to factories, and sheds to banks. In those years I learned a ton about building and construction. What my wife calls, “a lifetime of experience”.
After I retired, I took 6 months off to travel the country in my RV. When I got back I had 30 years worth of paperwork and information to go through. I also had a website, wbdbuilders.com. When I got the notice to renew the website, my wife thought it would be a great idea if I started a blog. A blog about construction so I could spread my years of knowledge among the world wide web.
Honestly it has been slow going. I’m a slow typer and the old brain doesn’t work as good as it used to. But I’m trying! I hope to write a few articles a month about different home projects and construction topics. In the mean time along with this blog I am also consulting for a replacement window and siding company out of Chicago called Innovative Home Concepts. And of course I am enjoying my retirement time with my wife Judy and our two
babies, Molly and Sammie (golden labs) traveling here and there in our Winnebago.
Get the Best Bang for Your Window Replacement Dollars
Are you thinking about window replacement for your home? If you are, there are many reasons that you should do this. If you have single pane windows, more than likely your electric bill, and your gas bill, are much higher than they should be. You need to be able to cut back on the amount energy that you are spending each and every month, and the best way to do this is quite energy-efficient windows installed right away. However, the price of doing this can often be quite high. It depends upon how many windows you need to replace, and the quality that you will be purchasing. It also depends upon whether or not you are doing this yourself, or you are allowing someone else to install them for you. In this article, we will look at different ways to save money when getting replacement windows today.
Replacement windows can be purchased at your local home improvement store. Every now and then, they will offer an occasional sale allowing you to save hundreds of dollars on your purchase. You will want to speak with someone at the store to make sure that you are getting the right ones for your home. Double pane double hung windows are usually the best ones to choose simply because they are the most energy-efficient. You also want to choose windows that are not made of metal because they will allow heat and cold to conduct easily in and out of your home. Once you have made the proper selection, and if there is a sale occurring, you should be able to purchase them at a significant discount and start the installation process right away.
If you are going to use a contractor to do this for you, then you will want to get several bids before you choose a professional to do the install. Unfortunately, depending upon the time of the year, it may be a few weeks before they can actually do the job. That’s why getting multiple bids in a short amount of time will allow you to choose the contractor or window installation specialist that will not only give you the best price, but be able to help you get this done in the shortest amount of time. You might want to check the Better Business Bureau to make sure that they are qualified and licensed to do the work. Once this occurs, you can use their services for your replacement windows project that you have in mind.
Siding is the outer covering that is applied to a building to help protect the structure from damage from the sun, water and other elements. It is also considered material that can be added to a building to increase curb appeal, and therefore increase the resale value of the property.
Siding can be formed with vertical or horizontal boards and it is available in several different types of materials including:
• Vinyl (Plastic)
The covering can also be applied to a home or building directly, or it can be added to another layer and then applied to the building.
Vinyl is a popular choice for siding with homeowners because it can update the exterior of a home instantly without the use of paint. This type of siding is very durable and can last for many years when properly cared for. However, there are several factors that homeowners should consider before they place vinyl siding on their home.
This type of siding is more affordable long term when you consider the expense of repairing wood and repainting every few years. The initial cost of the vinyl siding will be based on the size of the home and the thickness of the siding. Vinyl siding can also help reduce your heating and cooling bills because the siding acts as additional insulation around the home.
Vinyl siding does not fade from the prolong exposure to the elements like painted surfaces do. The only type of maintenance that is required for vinyl siding to stay newer looking longer is to pressure wash the siding every year. Some homeowners choose to pressure wash their siding twice a year.
Just like there are advantages to adding vinyl siding to your home, there are also several disadvantages to installing vinyl siding.
Vinyl Siding May Not Withstand Harsh Weather Conditions
While it is true that vinyl siding can stand up well against the elements, it is not as durable as wood siding in extreme weather conditions. High winds and heavy rains may cause the siding to peel away from the building. When the vinyl siding is damaged on your building, you will not be able to replace the individual boards, the entire panel will need to be replaced.
Vinyl Siding Can Hold Moisture
Moisture can become trapped within the vinyl siding between the boards and the panel. The dark and moist environment is the perfect breeding ground for mold, mildew and insects.
Vinyl siding is an excellent alternative to painting your home or building. It is easy to install and can increase the value of your home.

They respond when you call
If the contractor you are researching has the above qualification, it is a pretty good indication that that company is decent. But remember, even the best companies can have off days. Always do your research. Always check references. And always confirm all information that the company gives you. Protect yourself from a bad experience.

Air sealing recessed lights | DIY home improvement tips | Rule Your Attic! With ENERGY STAR
Learn how to identify and air seal leaks around an attic can light/recessed light. Can lights or recessed lights in your attic floor are notorious for air leaks allowing conditioned air into your attic and making your home less energy efficient. Properly insulating can lights can save money, save energy, make your home more comfortable, and reduce the emissions that contribute to climate change. It’s easy to do yourself. Get more attic insulation tips at http://www.energystar.gov/ruleyourattic.
Here are the steps to seal air leaks around recessed lights in your attic:
1. Turn off the light associated with the fixture you are sealing
2. Carefully enter your attic (for safety you may want to lay a piece of plywood across the floor joists to stand or kneel on) and find the recessed light or ‘can.’
3. Pull existing insulation away from the base of the can (be careful as the can may still be hot).
4. Place your insulation cap over the can to make sure it fits properly.
5. If necessary, remove the cap and make modifications to it so that the bottom rim lies completely flat against the attic floor when placed over the can (you may need to mark the cap’s base with a pen to indicate places where the cap needs to be cut to fit over any supporting brackets.
6. If necessary, cut the areas on the cap you’ve marked.
7. Once the insulation cap is placed over the can and lies flush against the attic floor, apply spray foam around the base of the cap and let it dry and cure for at least 30 minutes.
8. Once the foam is dried, cover the cap with the existing insulation.
9. You’re done with this step! Now there are a couple of other things you can do to improve your home’s energy efficiency:
– Make sure you have enough insulation in your attic; learn how to measure your insulation : https://youtu.be/mrkqiRY3drU?list=PLMvJzVnMdhhvJQDT87dQSbZ68yzExp6PD
– Determine how much R-value you need for where you live : http://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?c=home_sealing.hm_improvement_inspections#attic
– Check for other air leaks : https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLMvJzVnMdhhvJQDT87dQSbZ68yzExp6PD
Not enough insulation in your attic? Time to install more. Not sure if you can handle the job yourself? Watch this video to find out if you should DIY or hire a contractor: https://youtu.be/EAviffw4SFk?list=PLMvJzVnMdhhvJQDT87dQSbZ68yzExp6PD
